GEMS

Interview with Bonita Bennett of Being Single Magazine
For more than two decades, Bonita Bennett has been the publisher and visionary of Being Single Magazine, a national publication devoted to “enlightened living” for single men and women. She is also a published author, radio personality, noted speaker, and life coach.
For the past ten years, Ms. Bennett has hosted “GIRL TALK”, a monthly forum that seeks to provide women from all walks of life with tools of self-empowerment and self-improvement.
And who better to teach women about self-actualization, than this diva who started her own publication, even though she didn't have the outside “validation” of her writing ability, having been rejected quite often as a freelance writer! Ms. Bennett is also the author of the popular relationship self-help book, “How to catch and keep the man of your dreams.”
Today she shares with Online Dating Magazine readers her views on mating and dating, as well as her success story.
Can you tell our readers a little about who you are and your background?
Twenty -seven years ago I founded Being Single Magazine, because I saw a need for such a publication. I worked formerly in Hospital Administration, and I had always had a desire to write and become an author. However, I became a published writer only when I published myself. I would send story after story to magazine editors, and the only response I ever received was a rejection letter.
--
Why did you create Being Single Magazine?
To share my philosophy on life with others, and to provide provocative reading on life and relationships. I also felt that singles were under-served on reading material that spoke directly to their lifestyle.
--
What do you enjoy the most and the least about your current role?
I enjoy getting out a good message to the public at large, about what’s going on in the world around them, and how to live the best life you can.
--
Which is better—being single or being married?
I’ve been both, and I think both of them have great advantages, but I’m not sure which is best.
-
What would it surprise others to know about you?
Well, even though I come off tough-minded, I’m very sentimental. I cry at the drop of a hat, when my emotional button is tapped, I’m also a big kid in grown-up clothing. I love to play and all things outdoors.
--
Success is?
Having a personal relationship with God, and believing what He tells you.
--
What's your proudest accomplishment?
Being able to have my written thoughts (my column) consumed worldwide by people I’ve never seen and having a personal impact on the lives of my readers through my writings.
--
What advice would you give to singles seeking a quality relationship?
Know what you want and only accept the best.
--
How do you feel about T.V. dating reality shows?
I think they are what they were designed to be, entertaining, but not realistic.
--
How has Being Single changed over the last two decades?
Too many ways to describe.
--
In your opinion, can women who embrace celibacy as a lifestyle choice realistically expect to catch and keep a man?
Yes.
--
What's your next project? Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Not at this time. I’m working on a lot of things that I will reveal at a later time.
