Steven Roberts, CEO of Romantic
PlanetSteven
Roberts is the founder and CEO of Romantic
Planet.
Prior to that, he was cofounder of a company which
developed and sold art products
to museum gift shops.
Roberts graduated from UC Santa Cruz
with a degree in psychology.
His personal experience and the success
of his friends
with meeting people online convinced Roberts to help
develop
the
Romantic
Planet at
the age of 30. The service opened in February 2002
and was free for more than a year.
Roberts then implimented
a plan to offer the service at a low rate ($14.95 a
year) and earmarked some of the profits for charity.
He still gives free memberships to people who can't
afford online dating.
Interestingly enough, Roberts didn't
meet his wife through online dating. He met her while
salsa dancing. Now both help teach nightly salsa dancing
classes.
